Interesting places in Africa

Nok (Nigeria)

Terracotta (pottery) sculptures of humans and animals from this Nigerian site are the oldest examples of African figurative sculpture outside Egypt. Made by skilled artists, they were produced from c. 500-300 BCE into the first centuries of the current era.

Blombos

A South African coastal cave, important in research into the evolution of Homo sapiens, about 100 000 years ago. Key finds were pieces of worked bone, pierced shells hailed as the world's oldest jewellery, and chunks of red pigment marked with lines, controversially claimed as the world's oldest art.

Olduvai Gorge

A 48 kilometre long ravine in the Serengeti area of Tanzania. Erosion of layers of ash deposited over the last 2 million years has exposed animal bones and important hominid and human ancestor fossils, classified as Paranthropus boisei, Homo habilis and Homo ergaster.

Gona (Ethiopia)

Gona:

A site in the Awash region of Ethiopia that has yielded the world's oldest stone artefacts. The tools consist of pebbles modified for chopping, scraping and hammering. They are assigned to the Oldowan tradition (see Olduvai Gorge).

The Cradle of Humankind

The Cradle of Humankind is a World Heritage Site first named by UNESCO in 1999, about 50 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg, South Africa in the Gauteng province. This site currently occupies 183 square miles (474 km²); it contains a complex of limestone caves, including the Sterkfontein Caves, where the 2.3-million year-old fossil Australopithecus africanus (nicknamed "Mrs. Ples") was found in 1947 by Dr Robert Broom and John Robinson, as well as the Wonder Cave. The find helped corroborate the 1924 discovery of the juvenile Australopithecus africanus skull, "Taung Child", by Raymond Dart, at Taung in the North West Province of South Africa, where excavations still continue.

Transkei

Hi Africa

I just happened to stumble across this site so I thought I would tell you what my favorite place in Africa is.
Last year I stayed in the Transkei for 2 months and that was just amazing. It was as if I had gone back hundreds of years. Loads of hills, mountains, huts on the hills, unspoilt lands and amazing people. I love Africa and I hope to visit again soon.

Mayumba National Park, Gabon

Mayumba National Park is in the south west corner of Gabon. Its been called "Africa's last eden" and is seasonally home to the second highest nesting densities of leather back turtles in the world and playground to humpback whales and great apes.

Great Zimbabwe

30ks from the south-eastern town of Masvingo in Zimbabwe are to be found some of the most extraordinary man made remains in Africa. The ruins at Great Zimbabwe are remarkable; lofty, majestic, awe-inspiring, timeless. Formed of regular, rectangular granite stones, carefully placed one upon the other, they are the ruins of an amazing complex. The structures were built by indigenous African people between AD 1250 and AD 1450 believed to be the ancestors of modern Zimbabweans. The Great Enclosure is the largest single ancient structure south of the Sahara.

Fish River Canyon

The Fish River Canyon in Namibia is the second largest Canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the United States. This Canyon was formed by water flowing from the Fish River for millions of years. The Fish River is the longest river in Namibia and is about 650 kilometres. The Fish River Canyon is estimated to have formed about 500 million years ago.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro is a mountain in North Eastern Tanzania. It is the highest peak in Africa (over 5,000m). Kilimanjaro is one of the world's most accessible summits, visitors from around the world come in huge numbers to climb it. Most climbers reach the crater rim with little more than a walking stick, proper clothing and determination. Uhuru Point is the actual summit.
